Principal's Message - February 2012
Kate Ross, Principal
Great things are happening at Lindon Elementary! Through the combined efforts of the School Community Council, the PTA, and the District, we were able to scrape together sufficient funds to purchase a 30 laptop mobile computer lab! The PTA alone donated $5000 from the proceeds of the Auction to this worthy cause! The mobile computer lab will double the opportunities that students have to access technology at school! There is still work to be done to improve our technology situation at Lindon, but this is a wonderful start!
In addition to our great technology news, great things are happening academically at our school as well. This year, the overarching goal for our School Improvement Plan is to differentiate instruction to better meet the educational needs of all Lindon students specifically in the areas of literacy and math. Ultimately, we will measure our success toward this goal by tracking the progress of three students per class--one that is at grade level, one that is below grade level, and one that is above grade level over the course of the year. The objective is for students to make at least one year's progress by the end of the year. In order to make the goal of the School Improvement Plan a reality, we use funds from the Trust Lands program. This year we have used Trust Lands funds in the following ways:
- DRA Substitutes: In order for teachers to accurately assess students' literacy levels, we are providing substitutes to allow teachers additional time to administer the fall, winter, and spring DRA assessments.
- Literacy Aide: This aide oversees the Project Tutor/STAR Reading program to work with struggling students in literacy grades 1-6. This aide also recruits and trains volunteers, and works on-on-one with students to help them develop increased literacy skills.
- Professional Development: Funds have been set aside to send one teacher from each grade level to the CITES Literacy Promise Conference. This conference showcases renowned experts in the field of education and provide teachers access to current educational research and best practices. Funds have also been set aside for teacher professional development materials and resources.
- ESL Aide: This aide meets with our students who speak English as a second language and provides them extra support and instruction during the school day.
- Student Incentive Reading Program: To promote literacy amongst our student body, funds have been allocated for student incentives (such as the Lindon Pool) for the Spring Reading Program.
- Double Dosing Supplies: Double Dosing teachers have been given a budget for materials and supplies needed throughout the school year to enhance the Double Dosing curriculum.
- Re-teach and Enrich Aide: This aide tracks students, collects data, works with teachers, prepares activities, and supervises 4th-6th grade students during Fun Friday. This aide also oversees the ZAP (Zeros Aren't Permitted) Program each day during lunch.
- Equipment: Trust Lands' funds have allowed for the purchase of 5 projectors and 7 document cameras for teachers to encourage the integration of more technology in each classroom. In addition, funds have also been set aside to assist in the recent purchase of a mobile computer lab to provide students greater access to technology to enhance their learning experiences.
We are pleased to report that we are making progress toward our goals each day thanks to our fantastic teachers, staff, students, and parents. Student achievement remains our top priority, and our School Improvement/Trust Lands Plan is helping us to elevate our performance even further. Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Ross

Internet Safety Presentation
Lindon Elementary is very excited to have Sam Farnsworth come and teach parent's about Internet Safety. It is a world that for most the children know more about the computer and the internet than the parent's. Sam is on the PTA State School Board, has traveled all over Utah doing this presentation and has children that go to Lindon Elementary. He has given this presentation at State PTA Convention for the last few years and he keeps it updated with the growing technology.
Mark your calendars for Thursday, February 9th, 2012. It will be held in the library at 7:00 p.m.
Feel free to invite your neighbors, family and friends. They don't have to have children at Lindon Elementary to come. You will be glad you set this evening aside to protect your family.
