Important School Information
Air Quality Questions:
The Inversion that has produced a very visible haze in Utah Valley these last few weeks has prompted a number of parents to call the school and ask about district recess guidelines for days with poor air quality. Below is a press release by the Utah Department of Health. Alpine School District has endorsed these guidelines and Lindon Elementary will follow them.
Sugar Incentives
In a recent PTA Board meeting, a parent expressed concerns about the number of sweets that students receive at school. She conducted a survey for several weeks and found that, on average, her children received sweets nearly everyday. The sweets were given by the teacher, by the PTA, by room mothers as part of a class party, or by parents for birthday celebrations. She asked that the school move toward the elimination of sweets at school. I informed her that we have considered, and will continue to consider, measures that reduce the amount of sweets the students receive, but there is no intention of making Lindon Elementary a "sugar-free" school. For example, the school has removed treats linked to "Spirit Days" and downsized the treats for Grandparents Day, Reading Date with Mom and Dad, and the Home Reading books. I encourage parents and teachers that share her concern to consider stickers, pencils, and other non-treat items for class incentives and celebrations.
Box Top Competition
The last day to turn in box tops for the school competition is Friday, February 12th. The class parties will be held one week later, Friday, February 19th. We want to express our appreciation for your support and help in thsi endeavor as we try to raise money for Lindon Elementary.
As you turn in your box tops, it is helpful to trim them down to size and verify that they have not expired.
Storytelling Contest
Just a reminder for all those storytellers out there that you better start looking for a favorite story to share. The storytelling contest will be held the first week of March.
Literacy Week
February 22nd through the 26th is literacy week at Lindon Elementary. There are a variety of activities planned to help get the students excited about reading and to help them understand how important it is to their future success. Listed below are the events planned that week:

Faculty and Staff Appreciation Week
May 4th - May 8th is Faculty and Staff appreciation week. The PTA would like to recognize and praise the work our faculty and staff have been doing. We are sending home a list of things for the students to do during the week. These things are optional, but we would like to encourage you to help your student to participate.
Monday - Fruit Day (each student can bring whatever kind of fruit they think their teacher might enjoy)
Tuesday - Flower Day (it can be real flower, paper flower, candy flower or whatever you come up with)
Wednesday - Fruit Day (each student can bring whatever kind of fruit they think their teacher might enjoy)
Thursday - Treat Day (any snack or treat your teacher might think is yummy)
Friday - Send a note day (a Thank You note for your teacher)
We would like to thank Ranae Hansen for Heading up this wonderful week and for doing such a great job.
FRIENDS FOR SIGHT
This is a nonprofit organization setup to detect vision problems, is coming to UTAH Valley. We need people who recognize the importance of children's vision concerns, are willing to be trained in vision screening, and will volunteer at least 25 hours a year. Volunteers will be trained in vision screening to recognize Amblyopia, lazy eye blindness which affects one in four children and is correctable up to age seven, and other vision problems. Vision screening is done on the preschool level to identify problems as soon as possible. Our goal is to begin screening in Fall 2009. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Terri Smith at 801-226-3157, email
tap.smith@hotmail.com or the United way at 801-377-6600. For information on Friends for Sight please visit www.for-sight.com.
